Catching Up + Looking Ahead!

by - Tuesday, July 13, 2021

 As my first blog post EVER, I thought it would be a good idea to catch you up on my year so far and give you an idea of where I hope to be.

I randomly decided to run a 5K race in March. Things had just started opening back up since the pandemic shut everything down. I saw the Taylor Made Festival was happening that weekend, and I thought "why not race?" I really had no expectations or goals. I just knew that I could run 3 miles and that was enough for me! I ended up finishing at 27:40, which I was happy with, and won first place in my age division.

I think the most valuable part of this race for me was the connection with other runners that came out of it. I met a couple of other women from the area and even joined a local Facebook page. It has been fun to see the wide range of mileage goals for each month on the page, and everyone is always super supportive and encouraging.

The Taylor Made Festival left me wanting more, so I signed up for the Fit to Fight 5K, benefiting our Fire Department, at the beginning of May. My goal for this was to beat my previous 5K time. I tied it to the second. Still, I won first place in my age division.

This proved as yet another important race for me in other ways, however. It was at this race I ran into a co-worker at the time, who told me about an upcoming half marathon in October of this year. I had no idea how long a half marathon was, but it sounded like a good challenge. Plus, I was starting to get hooked on races at this point! Another important part of this race was that I met an neighbor of mine, Ciji, who I had seen running before in the neighborhood. She and I started running together, and I learned she was also signed up for the half marathon.

So that, in a nutshell, brings us to today! Half marathon training started at the beginning of July. Alex and I were out of town for the 4th, so I started a few days and about 5 miles behind. I am almost halfway through my second full week of training, though, and I am loving it.

Here are my current goals for this race right now:

* Run all 13 miles

* Finish under 2 hours, maintain 9:00/mile pace

These goals may change before then. Overall, I want to take my running to the next level. I want to go from an "ok" runner to a "21K" runner. I am sure I will find a new challenge after that, but for now I am focused on the task at hand!
