Tuesday Run + Life Lesson Learned From Running

by - Tuesday, August 03, 2021

Today's workout was a tough one. It was a strength run that consisted of a one mile warm up, then run .25 miles at a pace 10 seconds faster than my goal race pace (which for me meant the .25 miles was run at an 8:50 pace), followed by a .10 mile recovery jog. I did that 12 times, then ended with a 1 mile cool down.

I was so focused on maintaining the 8:50 pace when I needed to, that this really didn't feel like 6 miles. I kept the warm up and cool down miles easy, of course.

I have no idea when I hit that 7:58 pace lol, but I certainly didn't mean to. It takes a second for my Garmin to catch up to me when I speed up, so at some points I know I was going a little too fast. I would rather have gone too fast than too slow, though, as long as I wasn't burning myself out.

Whenever there is a mental resistance to something, whether it be a run, workout, maybe even a social event, it usually means that whatever it is, it's something you need to do. Much like the tempo run last week, I was intimidated by this run. I did not want to do it, and in those moments our mind tries to protect itself, I think, and rationalizes ways to get out of doing whatever that "thing" is. But often when you go through with it, those are the times you get the most benefits, to include a big boost in confidence. These types of things I'm talking about are boundaries that we put around ourselves of what we think we can and can't do. It's so important to break through those boundaries and show yourself they are only in your head!

I encourage you today or this week sometime, to find something a little out of your comfort zone, and do it! It could be running a mile, or calling a friend, or giving someone a compliment. You may already have that something in the back of your mind that you have just been pushing away, or it may be something that presents itself as you go through your week. Either way, always remember you are capable of more than you know!
